Stationed inside every wheel, brake rotors are disc-shaped brake components that create friction with the brake pads to slow and stop a vehicle. This occurs when the pressing the brake pedals causes brake fluids to flow into your calipers, which clamp on the pads and rotors to convert kinetic energy to heat.

The brake rotor (or brake disc) system succeeds the brake drum system, in which brake shoes press outward to a cylinder-shaped brake component to create friction directly to the wheels themselves. Evidently, the rotors are a much sustainable option of the two, the brake drums typically used for older and bigger cars for their reliable locking mechanisms instead of the rotor's more complex deceleration.

After around 40,000 miles, your brake rotors are likely to rust due to wear and tear depending on your driving habits. Make sure to change them the same time you'll change your brake pads, or the replacement would be for naught.
