There are two typical brakes nowadays: the brake drum system and the brake disc system. The brake calipers are included in the brake discs. They clamp on tiny teeth-like components called the brake pads, creating friction on the brake rotors as a way to slow your car down.

As with most of your brakes, the brake calipers sit inside each wheel. Compared to the brake drum system, they offer a more versatile way of slowing and braking. Though its parking capabilities are inferior to the brake drums, the calipers offer a lighter, smoother way of deceleration and stopping. The calipers may be part of a more expensive system, its versatility and lesser likelihood of early overheating are great reasons why modern cars prefer them.

Though your calipers aren't maintenance parts, they're largely affected by the wear and tear from your brake pads and rotors. Make sure to change them every 40,000 miles, depending on your driving conditions and your vehicle's manual, or your brake calipers and the rest of your braking system would slowly cause more accidents than prevent them.
